Match Preview: Worcester City

The pre-season has finished, and after gaining promotion to the Conference North, Bradford (Park Avenue) will host Worcester City on Saturday, at the Horsfall Stadium. (Kick off: 3.00pm)

Since the final whistle blew on the 5th May 2012 at the Northern Premier Division Playoff Final, the club have been preparing for life in a new division. Off the field, the Avenue have improved their facilities and the playing surface at the Horsfall Stadium. At the same time, the coaching staff of John Deacey and Mark Hume have strengthened their squad, including the addition of Danny Holland, who has scored 11 goals in six pre-season friendlies.

Ahead of their first game in the Blue Square Bet North, the Avenue should have their new signings available. However, John Deacey will be unable to select two players; Ross Daly and Michael Duckworth. The former Thackley midfielder, Daly, is continuing to recover from a hip operation after the playoff final, and is expected to return to action within a month. At the same time, Michael Duckworth will be unavailable due to serving a suspension. Also, the Avenue manager will have to check the fitness of Tom Greaves, as the striker has struggled throughout pre-season with a hamstring problem. But, Bradford will include a new goalkeeper, with both Tim Deasy and Ben Higginson challenging for the number one shirt.

The visitors; Worcester City, will be looking to improve on an impressive 7th position from last season. During the 2011-12 season, the away side finished only seven points behind fifth placed Nuneaton Town, who were promoted from the playoffs. During the pre-season, Carl Heeley has added several players to his squad, despite losing his captain Kevin O’Connor. Nevertheless, the new signings include Danny Glover, a striker that has returned to St. George’s Lane from Port Vale and midfielder Tyler Weir, who has signed permanently after playing for his new club on loan last season.
