Following the 1-1 draw to Oxford City on Wednesday, the Avenue boss John Deacey spoke to the official website.
Despite only taking one point from Oxford City in the last two fixtures, Deacey feels the play-offs are not out of reach:
‘It’s not all over. We have got five games left, with four of them being at home. We can finish the season on a high if we get anywhere near 75 points. Nobody can say we haven’t competed this season and that’s a fantastic achievement considering it’s our first season in the Blue Square Bet North.’
The Avenue manager has seen players leave and join the club during the season, plus injuries to key players, but praised his squad for their effort:
‘We lost James Knowles to FC Halifax Town, and injures to Martin Drury and Alex Davidson, who is also out for the rest of the season. Any team that loses three players of that quality are going to struggle. But I think the guys that have come in have done remarkably well, they have been excellent.’
Jordan Deacey grabbed the equaliser as Avenue went 1-0 down, and the manager reserved special praise for the team and the midfielder:
‘We showed some great character. We went 1-0 down and most teams would have folded at things like that, but we didn’t. Jordan got us back into the game and he was immense. He was man of the match without a doubt.’
