Clayton: 'It Was A Shot'

The Avenue goalscorer Adam Clayton spoke to the official website after his individual effort earned his side all three points:

Adam Clayton

The right back admitted he knew what he was doing:

‘I cut in and it was there to be hit, so I hit it! Some people said it was a cross but I disagree. It was a shot. I was happy it went in because we needed that goal.’

Despite the win, the defender gave credit to Workington AFC for their effort to get something from the game:

‘They are a lot better than what their league position suggests. We needed something to hold onto and we got that. They didn’t have a shot really, (John) Lamby didn’t have a save to make. The only effort came from Simon (Baldry) which went wide.’

Also, Clayton is happy his side are achieving the targets set by their manager, including victories on Monday’s at the Horsfall Stadium:

‘The manager thinks it was a better performance than Saturday, in some ways it was. We will take that. Also, three weeks ago, he said we can go on a run which we have done. We do well with these Monday night games. We seem to play better on a Monday than most teams, but, there were a few lads struggling including myself. We will be fine for Saturday!’
