Bradford (Park Avenue) 3-1 AFC Telford United

Two second-half goals from Nicky Boshell and Richard Marshall gave Bradford (Park Avenue) the victory against AFC Telford United at the Horsfall Stadium.

Liam Watson’s men took an early lead after Adam Farrell’s header. However, the home side equalised as James Knowles headed home from a free kick. After half time, Nicky Boshell fired a spectacular effort into the top corner and Richard Marshall scored the third goal from the penalty spot.

John Deacey made three changes to the starting eleven that won at Worcester City. Chris Howarth, Jamie Price and Nicky Boshell replaced Adam Clayton (suspension), Scott Maxfield (suspension) and Louie Swain, who dropped to the bench. Also, Jordan Deacey returned from injury to replace the injured Ross Daly.

During the opening ten minutes, the only notable opportunity fell to the home side. A through-ball from the captain Nathan Hotte found Alex Davidson, but his left-footed effort went wide of the post from 14 yards.

Shortly after, the visitors nearly took the lead. A long throw in from Matty McGinn was nodded over the bar by the Avenue defender James Knowles.

Two minutes later, AFC Telford United scored the first goal of the afternoon. Following positive play down the right wing, a cross from right back Wes Baynes was headed home by Adam Farrell from eight yards.

After the goal, the away side grew in confidence and came close to adding a second. The ball was not cleared by the Avenue defence, but a powerful strike from McGinn whistled wide from 25 yards.

Nevertheless, the Avenue winger Paul Walker created an opportunity for himself, but his 25 yard strike was pushed by Ryan Young into the feet of Hotte, but his weak rebound was easily saved by the goalkeeper.

However, the Avenue equalised with a header from one of their defenders. A fine delivery from Paul Walker was nodded by Knowles past the visitors’ goalkeeper Ryan Young from close range.

Furthermore, John Deacey’s men continued to attack, but Young was equal to their attempts to deny the Avenue a second goal.

Firstly, a through-ball from Walker was picked up Davidson and his low effort forced Young into a good save. Also, Nicky Boshell delivered a corner into the penalty area, but James Knowles was unable to keep his header down.

With seconds remaining, Davidson caused problems for the defence and his pass was controlled by Boshell, but his curling left-footed shot was saved by Young from 20 yards.

After the break, Boshell gave his side the lead. A left-footed pass from Jamie Price, returning from a rib injury, was flicked by Hotte into the path of Boshell. The unmarked midfielder brought the ball down onto his left foot and fired an effort into the top corner from 25 yards.

Despite taking the advantage, the Avenue were nervy and the visitors were looking for a quick response. Former Chester FC striker Tony Gray struck a low right-footed effort from 20 yards, but John Lamb did well to push the ball wide.

Then, the away side came close to scoring an equaliser. A deep cross from McGinn caused problems amongst the Avenue defence, but somehow, a low strike went narrowly wide of the post from four yards.

Liam Watson made a double substitution as Andy Owens and Robbie Booth were introduced and another former Chester FC man nearly made an impact on the scoreline. A neat inside pass was struck by Booth, but his right-footed effort blazed over the crossbar.

As both teams were looking for a goal for different reasons, the home side were given the opportunity to extend their one-goal lead. A lovely pass from Chib Chilaka found Davidson and the midfielder was quick enough to reach the ball, but the number ten was brought down inside the area by Ryan Young. The referee blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot. Richard Marshall struck a low right-footed shot past the goalkeeper to give the Avenue their first home victory of the season.
