Bradford (Park Avenue) and Barrow AFC recorded their first point in The Skrill North with a draw at the Horsfall Stadium.
In an entertaining first half, Nicky Boshell scored the first goal of the game. However, the visitors equalised with a penalty from Gareth Arnison. John Deacey’s men took the lead with an effort from James Knowles before conceding a fourth penalty in three league fixtures. Sam Sheridan’s strike ensured his side left the Horsfall Stadium with a point.
John Deacey made two changes from the starting eleven that were defeated by North Ferriby United. Chib Chilaka made his debut in place of Louie Swain. Also, Chris Howarth was promoted from the bench to replace Adam Quinn.
The home side took an early advantage. The Avenue striker Chib Chilaka, making his league debut, held off a challenge but the striker saw the ball taken off his feet by Nicky Boshell, and his right-footed shot found the bottom corner.
John Deacey’s men conceded their third penalty in three league matches. A foul from defender Adam Clayton on striker Dale Johnson saw the referee point to the penalty spot. The Avenue goalkeeper John Lamb was unable to save Gareth Arnison’s strike.
The Avenue regained the lead. A deep cross was nodded from the Barrow AFC defence into the path of centre back James Knowles and his low shot went into the bottom corner.
Again, Boshell and Chilaka were looking dangerous and created another opportunity. The midfielder flicked the ball to the striker, but Chilaka’s effort from 20 yards was too high to cause any problems for goalkeeper Anthony McMillan.
Chris Howarth came close to scoring a goal on his debut for the Avenue. A free kick from Richard Marshall found the unmarked number eight at the back post but his shot was easily saved by McMillan.
With one minute remaining of the first half, the away side nearly scored. A quick move ended with a cross to Johnson, but the striker on loan from FC Halifax Town, nodded the ball over the crossbar.
HALF TIME: BRADFORD (PARK AVENUE) 2-1 BARROW AFC
After half time, the Avenue wasted a good opportunity to extend their lead. A through ball from substitute Danny Forrest found Alex Davidson, but his shot from close range went wide.
John Lamb produced a fine save to deny Greg Mills. A cross from substitute Jamie Allen found its way to the winger, and he turned and struck an effort from 12 yards, but Lamb held onto the ball.
Seconds later, the home side lost possession, but Johnson struck a right-footed shot wide from 20 yards.
As the game was approaching the final fifteen minutes, the referee blew his whistle for handball, and awarded Barrow AFC a second penalty. Sam Sheridan sent Lamb the wrong way to equalise for Dave Bayliss’ men.
