Elliott Durrell’s late goal sealed a dramatic victory for Hednesford Town against Bradford (Park Avenue) at the Horsfall Stadium in The Skrill North.
The Avenue came close to taking the lead in the first minute. A clever flick from Alex Davidson found Danny Glover and the striker closed down on goal, but fired a left-footed effort over the bar from 14 yards.
Shortly after, the Pitmen broke the deadlock. Following a defensive error, the visitors were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Kris Taylor stepped up and curled the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner.
Minutes later, Taylor nearly doubled the Pitmen’s advantage. A corner was cleared into the feet of the midfielder, and his shot flew towards the top corner but the Avenue defender Adam Clayton cleared the ball off the line with an excellent header from underneath the bar.
However, the Avenue were denied by numerous saves from the impressive Pitmen goalkeeper Dan Crane. Before the break, Alex Davidson managed to dig out a shot from 25 yards, but Crane acrobatically tipped the ball over. After the half time whistle, Crane made two further saves from Paul Walker and Davidson to keep the scoreline in favour of the visitors.
Furthermore, the Avenue were unable to convert their best chance of the game. A low cross from Glover across the six yard line saw Davidson sliding in at the far post, but the winger failed to connect with the ball.
Then, into stoppage-time the game ended with an amazing finish.
John Deacey’s men worked the ball to substitute Ross Gardner, who neatly turned with the ball and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from 12 yards and the Avenue thought they snatched a late draw.
From the kick-off, Elliott Durrell picked up possession and dribbled past several Avenue players who were unable to stop the winger cutting inside onto his left foot and slotting a low effort past Lamb to the delight of the Pitmen.
